OPUNAKE.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) BACHELOR CARNIVAL. Considerable interest is being taken in the contest for the most popular bachelor, being run in aid of funds for St. Barnabas’ Hall. The withdrawal of the Pihama candidate came as a surprise to many, but it is now* reported that he contemplates entering the rnks of the Benedicts at an early date and has more serious matters to attend to. The Oaonui candidate is at the moment topping the voting list, with Opunake No. 1 candidate next. Mr Harry Newman, the No. 2- Opunake candidate, is running a close third. The latter lias for many years pa si; been on the local postal staff, and in the midst of this contest he has been transferred to the Wellington office. Prior to his departure he w*as. entertained by' his many friends, and was the recipient of a handsome travelling hag. His committee are continuing' their efforts on behalf of his candidature in the carnival. CONCERT. There was a fair attendance at the concert given in the Town Hall on Friday evening in aid of the funxls of the Methodist Church. The audience was a most appreciative one, and in every instance recalls were demanded. Airs Ferry, of New* Plymouth, made her first appearance before a local audience, and was at once a favourite, having on two occasions to respond to the third recall. Air H. Leslie Piper was again much appreciated. The programme throughout was of a high order, and warranted better pati’onage than was afforded on this occasion. Those who assisted with the programme were: Mrs Ferry, three solos; Airs Church, solo i Miss Preston, solo; Alisses AlcLean and Sinclair, duet; Mr H. Leslie Piper, three solos; Rev. E. B. Chambers, solo; Air H. Brooker, two solos; Air H. Pickering, comedian. Accompaniments were played by Airs T. P. Hughson, Alisses Preston and Sinclair, and Air G. Brunette (violin). Apology was made for the absence of Air H. Papapakura, who is suffering from a severe attack of bronchitis. LABOUR DAY. Holiday weather prevailed for the 1 celebration of the first of the summer holidays. A number of the local sports journeyed to the Waverley course, and much foreign capital was in circulation in the town yesterday. A large number of young people journeyed to the Bible Class rally at Stratford. Others visited the tennis courts; the elder men w*ere fully occupied at the bonding green. The beach attracted a large number of outside visitors, including a large party of students from the Hawera Technical High School. Sea bathing was freely indulged in.
