FORTHCOMING FIXTURES, Oct. 30 and Nov. I —Poverty Bay Turf Club Spring. Nov. 1 and 3 —Auckland R.C. Spring. Nov. I—Upperl—Upper Clutlia R.C. Annual. Nov. B—New8 —New Zealand Cup. Nov. 8 and 10—Hamilton R.C. Annual. Nov. 8, 10, 12, and lo —Canterbury J.C. Metropolitan. Nov. 21 and 22—South. Canterbury J.C. Spring. Dec. 26 and 30, Jan. 1 and 2—Auckland R.C. Summer. WELLINGTON MEETING.. CONCLUDING DAY. GOLD LIGHT WINS CHAMPION PLATE. PEARCE HANDICAP TO INFERNO(SpeciaI to Star.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 27. The Wellington spring meeting was concluded under ideal weather conditions. The sun and wind had dried up the course well, and at the end of the day it provided very good going. There was a record attendance and, as a corollary, some spirited betting. The Vice-regal party was again present, and after the Champion Plate Viscountess Jelilcoe presented the Cup to Mr. W. T. Hazlett, the owner of Gold Light. Dazzling 'Light was nearly an evenmoney favourite for the Spring Trial Stakes, with good support for Pronto, Black Rock, and Agitato. From a. good start Megalo, Star Shell, Black Ronald, and Dazzling Light were the first to become prominent, hut Dazzling Light was sent back to nearly last before a furlong had been covered. Round the top turn and into the straight Megalo led Agitato, Tikima, Star Shell, and Black Ronald, with Calm Eve next. Megalo led Star Shell and Agitato at the turn, hut although Star Shell was done with at the distance, Megalo could not hold off Agitato, who won by half a. length. Dazzling Light, finishing fast, was two lengths away third, half a length in front of Pronto. Black Rock, Star Shell, Dubious, Haze and Rich Prize were next. The winner appeared still capable of improving. and is apparently a. colt to be reckoned with when summing up the classics. At an inquiry after the race into the interference with Dazzling Light it was decided that W. Bagby, on Megalo, was responsible, and accordingly Dazzling Light was placed second and Megalo third, and Bagby was suspended for three months. The dividends were paid out on Megalo before the decision was arrived at.

Bonliomme was at only a fraction over even money in the Tararua Handicap, with Kilceit, Brigadier Bill, and Gluement the best backed of the remainder. From a great start Crishna, Panache, Brigadier Bill. Bonhomme, Kilceit. and Master Black were the first to become prominent, and they comprised the leading division right round to the turn for home. Here Bonhomme ran up outside of Crishna and Panache, with ICilceit handy. Bonhomme was going easily in front all the way down the straight to the half distance, where Quiescent could be seen corning fast on the outside. Bonhomme finally won cleverly by half a length from quiescent, who was a head in front of Master Black. Kilceit was close up fourth, and All Gold, Gluement, Panache and Brigadier Bill next. Although Bonhomme won by a narrow margin he scored very easily, as Barry hardly moved on him until the last few yards. - '

• Koauau, on which there were 2075 tickets, carried over 500 more than Sir Wai in the second hurdles, then after a drop of 300 came Miss Mickey, with Hyrax carrying only half as many tickets as the third favourite. Elmorz led Hyrax, Koauau, Miss Mickey, and Sir Wai down the straight, Koauau making a faulty jump at the second flight. Hyrax, Elmorz, Koauau, Miss Mickey 'and Sir Wai was the order down the hack, and Pantler moved np round tlie ton turn. The order at the straight entrance was Hyrax, Sir AA’ai, Pantler, and Miss Moekev, and once over the last fence Hyrax did the best, defeating Sir "\Vni by three-quarters of a length. Miss Mickey was eight lengths away third, well clear of Pantler and Koauau. Runnymede was an odds.on favourite for the Roseneath Handicap, but Father O’Flynn, Tlie Thorn, and the bracketed pair, Standard and Hymestrason, carried four-figure investments. The Thom was slow to move, and the first to become prominent were Gyrene, Runnymede, Victory Bond, and Hymestrason. Straightened up for home, Runnymede went away to c-anter in an easy winner by two lengths from victory Bond. Standard, finishing fast, was the barest possible margin away third. Grand National, The Thorn, Hymestrason, and Anthony were next. Again there was not much between Victory Bond and Standard at the finish, while The Thorn might have been closer if he had jumped away well.

Inferno was backed down to even money in the Pearce Handicap, Suggestion and First Salute also carrying four-figure investments in the big pool of £10,262. Merry Day received , .all the best and Carpentier all the j worst of the start, hut when the field settled down Merry Day was leading Quest, Kuhio,'and Suggestion. At the half-mile post Quest, Happy Days, Merry Day, and Kuhio were in front, and, racing for the straight, Kuhio and Inferno were in the lead from Quest, Suggestion, Merry Day, and Happy Days. Straightened up for home the field dosed up, and Inferno shot into the lead in a great finish. The judge placed Inferno first by a neck, and gave a dead heat for second place between Happy Days and Imperial Spark, the last-named certainly being second. First Salute and Suggestion were close up and were followed by Little River, Carpentier, W tie tea , Kuhio, and Quest. The race provided a sensational finish, and there is some doubt if the judge’s placings were quite correct, for Happy Days was certainly not in line with Imperial Spark. The winner scored in great style, and there is no doubt he is • a game and highclass colt. Gold Light carried nearly half the investments in the Champion Plate, with Royal Divorce and Tarleton the second and third favourites, between them only half as well backed as the favourite. From a good start Tarleton led out of the straight from Royal Divorce, Gold Light, Black Ronald, Enthusiasm, and Musketoon. Running to the rnile post Enthusiasm had taken charge from Gold Light and Royal Divorce, with the others close up. Enthusiasm was two lengths clear at the six-furlongs post, and there was little change in the order to the home turn. Here Gold Light went up to Enthusiasm, and Royal Divorce ' tried to come through on the rails, hut was unsuccessful. Gold Light took charge at the distance and went on to win all out by a length from En--3 thusiasm. Tarleton, finishing on, was ) a head away third, just- in front of Musketoon and Royal Divorce. Black

Ronald broke down in the last part of tlie race, Morris dismounting alter the post was reached and leading him back to the birdcage. The win was full of merit, and there is no doubt Gold Light is a great mare. Enthusiasm and Tarleton both ran good races, the former showing much improvement on her first day’s form.. Musketoon ran just tlie race one would expect, and far from disgraced, himself. Royal Divorce was unlucky, as h e was interfered with twice at critical stages of the'race. Black Ronald was very lame after the race, and it is to be regretted this good galloper is so unsound.

Master Sandstone wound up favourite for the Nainai Handicap, carrying nearly 900 more tickets than Lava, the second favourite. Santonio, Motley, and Martian Miss were also well sup ported. From what seemed a good start, Motley, Fool’s Paradise, Master Sandstone, and Lava showed out first, and they were joined by Tukia at the turn. The last-named had the leaders in trouble at the half-distance, but Reremoana then appeared and quickly put the race beyond. doubt, defeating Tukia by two lengths. Civilf’orm was a length and a half away- third, a head in front of Fool’s Paradise, with' Motley, Santonio, and Wilderness close up. The winner improved a great deal on his first day’s running, and he won very decisively. For her first race of the season Tukia did very well, and nearly completed the stable double with, Inferno The favourite faded out over the last two furlongs,' but can be relied on to do better soon. I Piquant (2326), Subjection (1467), i Ilka (1311)', Hall Mark (1263). Tinohari I (1552)and Ruby Ring (1014) were the ! favourites for the Ruahine Handicap, which was a. heavy betting race. Piquant lost her chance by again failing to jump away smartly, and the early leaders were Ilka, Lake’ Urn, Subjection, and Treadwell.- Subjection was done with soon after the course proper was reached, when- Ilka, was galloping in front well • withjn herself. Ruby Ring and Gardant became prominent halfway down the running, the former failing to reach Ilka by a length. Gardant was a similar distance nwav j third, then coming Treadwell, Hall Mark, Tinohari, Ma Boughal, and Subjection. The. winner scored an easy victory, showing herself a class above the opposition. Ruby Ring just failed over the last part of the journey. Gardant and Treadwell ran good races, the latter showing that her first day’s ietor.v was no fluke. THE RESULTS. WELLINGTON, Oct. 27.
