STRATFORD-MAIN TRUNK.
. W ORK FOR. THE YEAR. £IOO,OOO TO BE SPENT. (by telegraph—press association. . WELLINGTON, Oct. 27. The Government’s proposals for work on the Stratford-Main Trunk railway during the year 1924-25! are revealed in the Public Works Statement. The amount estimated to be spent is £IOO,OOO. Last year £115,000 was voted and £60,283 was spent. On the Stratford-Main .Trunk, east end, the permanent line is laid to .14 miles 15 chains. Beyond this point a temporary line suitable for ordinary railway rolling-stock drawn by a light locomotive is run, partly on the main road to the 16-mile peg, where or construction depot, dealing also with a goods and passenger service, connects by a metalled road with Ohura township, three miles away. During the en suing year it is hoped to complete the permanent line and bridges to Ohura station (19 miles) and all station yard structures / along the length. At the west end, the construction of road and railway bridges on the Rfaekdhua section, for which the material has already been obtained, will be undertaken, and also the construction of a service tramway to the Tangarakau River, surveys for which are well in hand; OPUNAKE R AILWAY. The Statement also deals with the construction of the Onunake branch railway. The vote for the owning year is '£64',soft. Last, year £75,000 was voted arid £58,824 was spent. The whole of the formation and plate-laying wgrks will be completed, and- tenders will shortly he invited for t-he erection, of station buildings at the firstV six stations.
