Now that the Main North Road via i.iojtau and Awakino is impassable for motor trail ic, the time taken in transporting, nmds over that route is probably longer than would otherwise be tr.e case. The horse coaches are at present being used between Awakino and Tongaparutu. On this particular occasion, when the conch reached the Makau ferry, there wo.s no one there to ferry it over. The boatman had to be brought out from his house, and when he- arrived the punt was on the southern side of the river, and by the time it was brought oyer and the coach ferried to- the other side his Majesty’* mail had been delayed 45 minutes. This caused the service to miss the ’bus connection at VYaitara and a special oar had to he out- on to complete the last few miles of the journey.
