-- A B m tzuii m RINGBONE IN HORSES. ITS CAUSE AND EFFECT. Ringbone is classified as one of the hereditary diseases of horses. It frequently is a source of lameness, and sometimes of anchylosis of the bones below the fetlock. Ringbone often is referred to- as “high” and ■“low." Though wanting in accuracy this is a more or less convenient distinction, as many eases are confined to the short pastern bone (corona), while in others the long pastern (or suffraginis) is the seat of the trouble. The disposition to giowth around the bone accounts for the name, but may mislead the novice *f he expects all osteous deposits upon these bones to take a circular direction. The surgeon would call any superimposed bone upon -the short or long pasterns a ring bone. Heavy horses with upright pasterns and relatively short bones are the most disposed to this effect. The long and spring pasterns of the blood horse obviate concussion to a great extent. Ringbone results from inflammation of the periosteal covering of the natural bone induced, as in the ease with splints, by outside violence, such as treads from another horse, or blows from any other cause. Treatment consists usually in giving the subject a dose of cooling medicine, and the applications of cold lotions. Special shoeing to relieve concussion, blistering, firing and unnerving, if all other means fail to render the animal workable, are sometimes resorted to. The letters in the illustration indicate: (A) Extensor pedis tendon; (B) os suffraginis or first phalanx; (C) coronae; (D) ringbone.
