“ENGLISH HYPOCRISY.”
OSCAR ASCHE’S OUTBURST. LONDON, Oct. 2. Having delivered himself of a broadside against English hypocrisy, which demands that all spice be taken out of plays translated from the French “so that the mistress becomes the governess and there is no sense left,” Mr Oscar Asche is reconciling himself to the withdrawal of “The Royal Visitor,” after a nine days’ run at Her Majesty’s. This ia compared with “Chu Chin Chou’s” 2238 performances at the same theatre. He will retire in his prehistoric Rolls Royce, like Cincinnatus, to his farm. at Hornsby, Gloucestershire, pending his reappearance in a new play. Mr Asche says that booing has increased in England theatres during his absence. “In Australia,” he says, “they tu'rw the fire hose on such persons.” After all the play was hopeless from the start. .
