KAPONGA QUEEN CARNIVAL.
CAMPAIGN CONCLUDED. SPOUTS’ QUEEN ELECTED. The Kaponga Town Hall was taxed to its 'utmost capacity on Friday evenuig by the throng of visitors in attendance at the final session of the two days’ bazaar, which 'marked the conclusion of the Catholic . queen carnival campaign. The pervious session also attracted a fair patronage, and throughout the afternoon and evening the stalls conducted by the respective committees plied a vigorous trade, resulting in the clearance of practically the whole of the large numbers of various articles offered for sale. The polling closed at 11. p.m., and shortly after the results were announced by the Rev. Father Moore, P.P., as follows: Sports candidate, Mary Crowley City candidate, Nita Bolger, 15,099 votes. Farmers’ candidate, Ida. Sollicker, 7486 votes. Two hundred each of the votes credited to the sports and city candidates were nominal only, having been awarded to tlie former as the leading candidate on Thursday evening, and to the latter as the result of the team’s success in the candidates’ tug-of-war contest. Father Moore congratulated the queen elect and the sports committee cn the success which had crowned the months of arduous effort, and the other candidates and committees on the excellent results accomplished. On behalf of the church committee, he thanked all who had been associated with the carnival for their enthusiastic endeavours, and stressed the committee’s deep debt of gratitude to the members of the public who had assisted in the success achieved, the gross receipts to date being £973 19s 2d. He felt sure that when the opportunity for reciprocation was presented a worthy response would be forthcoming. Rousing cheers greeted his calls on behalf of the carnival queen and her two competitors; The tug-of-war finals afforded exciting encounters, causing much enthusiasm among the spectators. First place was secured by Tirimoana, Riverdale being second. Excepting those given below', the personnel of the teams was published on Thursday, the only alteration being the replacement of Keeley by Cronin in the Railway A team during their two final pulls." The results were as follow: Riversdale beat Railway A. Gaining a _ two-inch margin at the outset, the winners field. stubbornly, and though Railway finished with a good attempt, they had to cede the victory by an inch. ‘ i Tirimoana, who-, drew 7 the bye, beat a scratch team—G. B. Bruce (skip), G. Sanson, D. Hunt, A. Guy, R. Mamdonald, and U. H. Gilshnan —by one and a half inches. Railway A beat Riverdale. The latter secured the advantage in the first strain, and held an inch at one minute. In the next minute Railway evened, and gained half an inch. A keen tussle ensued, both teams being extended. Fifteen seconds before time, Riverdale had a little in their favour, but a determined counter by Raihvay secured the verdict by a quarter of an inch. Riverdale beat Railway A in their third contest to decide the smi-final. Concluding the first sixty seconds, the winners had a hare half-inch to spare, but at tw 7 o minutes Railway had reversed the position. During the last minute both held and- lost small margins till a final response by Riverdale gave them one and a half inches as the whistle sounded. Contesting the tournament vfinal, which w 7 as decided in a ; ‘sudden death’’ pull, the unbeaten Tirimoana team defeated Riversdale, who- as the result of their previous encounters, were obvious-' 1)7 too. tired to maintain the strain. Early in tlie pull tfie ribb'on showed an inch in favour of Tirimoana, who clung tenaciously, and pulling strongly at the finish, increased the margin to five inches. In the final of the candidates’ tourney, City—B. Joyce (skip), A. Mills, A. Guy. J. Doyle, G. Dawson, and H. H. Gilshnan defeated the Sports’ team by six inches, and secured the 200 votes for their candidate. On behalf of the tournament committee, Mr D. P. F. Maloine suitably congratulated the winning teams, and extended thanks for the support given by all who had competed. He also expressed appreciation of the vklued services rendered bv Messrs A. Hansen and W. Slattery, who had officiated as judge and timekeeper on Thursday, and by Messrs J. .J. O’Dowd and Jack Malone, who had acted in those capacities respectively on Friday. Mr H. J. Edwards officiated as returning officer of the candidates’ poll, the scrutineers being Messrs Jas. Kissick (Sports), J. UwDonoghue (City), and Alois Schumacher (Farmers). ■ The following conducted the stalls throughout the bazaar:—Sports : Mesdames C. Crowdey and Miss M. Sadle,r (auctioneer). City: Mesdames J. Bolger, H. Mellow 7 , A. Bates, Misses J. Melville and H. Powell. Farmers : Mesdames J. Doyle and M. Wills. Arrangements for afternoon tea and supper w 7 ere supervised on Thursday by Mrs W. B. Fearon and A.' Bates (Sports’ candidate committee), and on Friday by Mesdames J. Hammersley iunr.., Jas. Kissick. D. Fitzgerald, aiid P. O’Dowd (City Committee). Mrs C. Crowley and Mr D. P. F. Malone, on behalf of the oueeii elect; Mrs J. Bolger and Mr W. "Melville, on behalf cf tbs City candidate; and Mrs Sollicker and Mr A. Schumacher, on behalf of the Farmers’ candidate, desire to express their sincere appreciation of the assistance given throughout the carnival, while all engaged in the campaign wish to pay a tribute to tlie work of Mi 7 W. Melville, w 7 ho, besides being the City Committee secretary, officiated as general secretarv to the carnival.
