THEY WANT MERINO.
BIG DEMAND FOR FINE WOOL. TAILORS’ PRICES JUMP. LONDON, Oct. 5. Londoners must pay higher prices for underwear, suits, and overcoats, owing to. the shortage in the wool clip. There is a great demand for high-class Merino. “Every country in Europe is crying out for Merino .wool,” says a prominent cloth manufacturer. “They all want the best. Germany is buying huge quantities, and France and Belgium also are big purchasers. English manufacturers of underwear are buying heavily.” Tailors are experiencing difficulty in getting clothing, and are paying the manufacturers 20 per cent more than in 1923. Manufacturers are refusing quotations for forward delivery owing to- the continuous rise in -wool prices. Tailors have advanced their prices by 20 per cent. Overcoats cost eight guineas, cheap quality suits seven guineas, and good cashmere doth suits nine and a-half guineas. West End tailors are charging 14 and 15 guineas for suits.
