(by telegraph—press association. WELLINGTON, Oct. 23. Although the tracks had dried up considerably, they were still heavy at Trentham this morning. The weather was fine hut cold, an dther© was a fair number of onlookers. The extreme outside of the trial grass and tan tracks were available. Haze and Kaladare were the first to work, running four furlongs in 53sec., the last three taking 42sec. Nigger Minstrel, striking out freely, sprinted half a mile in the last three furlongs in 39,sec. It is stated that he is an unlikely starter •at Trentham, and that H. Gray will ride him in the Derby at Riccarton. S. Waddell’s team were out, hut were not asked to go fast. Gold Light strode out well in a working gallop on the trial grass. She is in great order. Master Sandstone and Piquant were together at the end of five furlongs, run in 1.8, the first two furlongs taking 27sec. It was a useful gallop and should benefit Piquant considerably. Crislma was allotted a working gallop, once round on the grass. Merit cantered round to the straight entrance and theu sprinted home. Ecuador, Wench, and Aeriform were sent to gallop six furlongs. Ecuador was left six or seven lengths, hut was going faster than the other pair, and was in front of them at the finish. The first furlong was run in 14-sec., two furlongs in 27sec., and the full distance in 1.22 2-5. Glimpse and Quiescent dashed over five furlongs-in 1.8, the first in 13sec., and two furlongs in 26i-sec. Musketoon (W. Ryan)', Comical, and Diamond Ring broke away at the ten furlong post. Musketoon was slow to begin, and at the end of- a. furlong he was _ at least eight lengths behind Comical, who was a length behind Diamond Ring. Musketoon had joined the others with three furlongs to go, and at the finish he was holding Diamond Ring, with Comical beaten off. Musketoon appeared to carry a good deal more weight than Comical, while Diamond Ring had a very light boy up. The first two furlongs occupied 28sec., three in 412-ssec., four in 55sec., five in 1.10, and the full distance in 2.21 3-5. Motley and The Thorn, who arrived yesterday, did half pace work.,' Both are in good order. Motley bearing an infinitely improved appearance since last seen. They were: Palestrina, Carpentier, Lava, Tarleton Victory Bond, and Gyrene. ’ All lookwell NOTES AND COMMENTS. , (By Maecenas). T.he imported Musketoon is looking' remarkably well just now, awl his an" pearaiiee has impressed the track watchers at rrentham. Royal Divorce won so decisively at Wanganui that a mere “tyro” would select this English-bred one to do. well during the current season, and one may' expect Royal Divorce to run well at. trentham, •^ ,t ' nils the Dominion’s leading two-year-olds are seen in action in the" Wellesley Stakes, but to-morrow’s race will be an exception, and we will have to wait longer, before our best youngsters oppose each other. The fields will be very large and representative at the Wellington Rncimr Club s spring meeting, and as is usually the case under such conditions win'ners may be hard to pick. Since going out. to Trentham, the three-year-old Nigger Minstrel has not heen asked to do much, but lias freshened up a lot. Unless at his best this colt will not nm in . the Champion 1 kite, but present indications point to Minstrel running. Bin Arlington was running ] rominently at the home turn in his only pievious start (Wanganui), and lie may show up in the T'aita Handicap at irentham to-morrow. During August, at the Christchurch Hunt and Grand National meetings, bantiago showed much promise as” a jumper, and as his showing at the Carterton meeting proved he is well, Santiago should be well supported in irentham. When Bonhomme won at the late Wanganui meeting, lie finished like a good one, and as lie is engaged in the Riinutaka Hack at Trentham, he mav do. the Fordoll stable (Tilley; s) a further good turn. ciass of engaged in the Wellington Handicap sire really good, and a capital race, can bo looked for•.vard to. Guldlighfc von the Avondale tup with 9.3 in the saddle, so with 3.9 to-morrow she is nicely handicapped, but Musketoon may avenge the defeat at. A roll dale, while on Wanganui running Enthusiasm must be reckoned with. Juke in many former years, the Shorts Handicap at the ’Wellington meeting bears an open appearance. Bene us and .suggestion both ran well at the Masterton meeting, hut Motley and Reremoana may be too brilliant for th.?y Wnirarapa-owned pair. No less than twenty-eight hacks figure in the October Handicap, and half this number at least will pay’ their way during the current season. Piquant is brilliant, while Rehutai and Lava have shown good form, and it is possible mav run on better than, the English-bred filly.
