The Minister of Industry has received a report from the Board of Industry declaring 38s per week to be the living wage for an adult female . in the Metropolitan area. FOOD PRESERVATIVES. Received Oct. 24, 9.35 a.m. LONDON, Oct. 24. The final report of the Departmental Committee on the use of preservatives in food recommends the prohibition of preservatives in all articles of food and drink offered for sale, whether manufactured' here or imported, with a tew supeeified exceptions, including the use of _ specified quantities of sulphur di- ' oxide in dried fruit, preserved whole f.riiit or fruit pulp, alcoholic wines, non-alcoholic wines, cordials, sweetened or unsweetened fruit juices; also the use of benzoic acid as an alternative in non-alcoholic wines, cordial, and fruit juices.—Reuter. FRANCE’S ARMY. PARIS, Oct. 23. The Finance Commission recommends a reduction in the army estimates by 70,000,000 francs, which, it claims, can lie effected without weakening national defence. The proposal entails a reduction in the period of compulsory service to a year. Following a statement by the Premier (M. Herriot) the commission, by 20 votes to 12,- approved the suppression of credit for the French Embassy to the Vatican. WIRELESS WONDERS. LONDON, Oct. 22. The Radio Society of Britain carried a- resolution congratulating the members who successfully established twoway radio communication with New Zealand, also felicitating the Radio Society of New Zealand and the New Zealanders who co-operated.
