The growth of the attendance at the Fraser Road School has necessitated increased accommodation, and Hie Education Board last night resolved to make application for this extra room. The Hawera Amateur Athletic Club will hold the first meeting of the season on the show grounds on Labour Day ('Monday next), commencing at 2.30 p.m. The programme consists of a variety of running and hurdling events; also discus and javelin throwing and relay racing. The star item will be the cycle road race over a course of 17 miles. This race starts and finishes in front of the grandstand. Members of the Women’s National Reserve and friends gave a surprise party at the Returned Soldiers’ Club last evening, when a programme of musical items, billiards and pingpong was arranged and an excellent supper dispensed. Those who contributed musical items were Miss Herbert. Mrs. Craig and Messrs. R. Vivian, W. A. Simpson and McDonald and McDonald’s orchestra, while the pianists for the evening were Mrs. L. A. Taylor and Mr. .J. Renwick. Miss Pioken and Mr. Maslin were the winners of the billiard tournament and Mrs. Rudge won the ping-pong. Mrs. W. A. Spragg was the organiser of the party.
