TUG-OF-WAR CONTEST.
KAPUNI TOURNAMENT. * ’ RAILWAY TEAMS SUCCESSFUL. Before an enthusiastic : gathering, winch taxed the accommodation ot tne ivapuni Hail, tne t-ig-oi-war tournament, organised m aid of the-city queen candidate competing iii the Kaponga carnival, was concluded bn Saturday evening. First honours were won by the -'Railway A team, and Railway B ceam received the second award. The following composed the winning teamsßailway A: H. McOarvitl (.skip;, D. Edwards, E. Keheley,. O. Long, G. Levings and W. Huntley. Railway B: H. Meitor (skip), J. Matson, C. Cronin, G. Sanson, W. McOush and J. Calgar.. /The other teams were as previously published, excepting chat- C. Denman appeared in place of G. Sullivan as skipper of; the Railway “Midgets.” - The following pulls, concluded the first round: —Railway B defeated Railway ‘Midgets” by three inches. Railway A defeated Riverdale by half ail inch. Kaponga defeated Taungatara by one inch. The defection of Rowan left the three above-mentioned winners to. contest a triangular final. The draw resulted in the meeting of Railway A and Kaponga. In their first pull, contrary to expectations, Kaponga failed to hold the Raihvay five, who, securing an inch advantage with the first strain, gradually assumed indisputable supremacy, and amid great enthusiasm were hailed the winners by four inches. .. In the second pull the. better-conditioned railwaymen again proved too strong, and Xaponga had to cede them the victory by a three-inch ma rgin, : In a well-contested pull Railway A then beat Railway B, the difference being one inch. This pullgave the former first place in the • tournament, as the R’s defaulted in the remaining two pulls t-oi decide the issue. The announcement that Railway B would then have to contest second honours with Kaponga caused some demur oy a proportion of the spectator's, who considered that Kaponga should have dropped out of the tournament on being defeated by Raihvay A. Amid objections expressed by the dissatisfied onlookers, Railway B were preparing to mount the boards, when A. Zimmerman, on behalf of the Kaponga team, announced that in view of the misunderstanding which had arisen among those who had supported the tournament his team would waive the right to compete further, and second place was duly awarded to Railway B. On the conclusion of the programme shortly before midnight, Mr AV Melville (non. secretary), speaking on liehalf of the committee, congratulated the successful teams, and in thanking all the competitors and the who had supported the - tournament-, expressed appreciation of the services rendered by Messrs J. Paterson and AY. Slattery as judge and timekeeper respectively. . - - Supper arrangements were supervised by a ladies’ committee, including Mesdames J. Doyle, A. Bates, H. MoL low. T. AVinters, and the Misses -H. Powell, J. Murphy, and Iv., Murphy, in appreciation of whose courtesy the thanks of all in attendance are due.
