KAPONGA QUEEN CARNIVAL.
GENERAL MEETING. At a well-attended general meeting of the committees associated with the Kaponga queen carnival, consideration was given to matters concerning the two days’ bazaar which on Thursday and Friday next will mark the conclusion of the campaign. The Rev. Father N. Moore, P.P., presided. It was decided to have the official opening ceremony performed at 1.30 p.m. on Thursday, and that the afternoon session on Friday would commence at the same hour. The opening time for the evening sessions was fixed for 7.30 p.m. It was resolved that the final c-ount of votes polled for the three queen candidates would commence at 10.30 p.m. on Friday, at which time the campaign would definitely close. Each committee was authorised to appoint scrutineers, and it was decided to request Mr. C. H. Severne (Kaponga} to officiate as returning officer. To encourage the early return of votes polled, it was decided to credit the candidate holding the leading position at 10.30 p.m.' on Thursday with an extra 200 votes. As the result of lots being drawn, supper arrangements for Thursday and Friday evenings respectively were left to the city and sports candidates’ committees. TUG-O’-WAR TOURNEY. Considerable discussion was devoted to the organisation of the monster tug-of-war tourney commencing on Thursday evening. The prize-money as advertised was confirmed, it being further decided that the tournament would be an open competition, teams to consist of five members and, if desired, a skipper. Thursday at 8 p.m. was fixed as the closing time for nominations, the first pull to commence at 8.30. Messrs J. Paterson and W. Slattery were appointed as judge and timekeeper respectively. Messrs D. P. F. Malone, W. Melville, J. Hammersley, J. Malone and James J. Kissick v r ere appointed as the tournament committee, the three first-named being authorised to frame rules, to be announced prior to the commencement of the tourney. To avoid possible confusion arising from post entrants having paid for admission to the bazaar, it was decided that all competitors would he charged the public admittance fee, and that the amount paid by each member would be refunded-to the captains of the respective competing teams. An open lazy stick competition for a prize of £5 was also included in the competitions programme. Arrangements were made to hold an additional tug-of-war contest, open to teams representing the three candidates. the prize to be a special award of 200 votes. SPORTS QUEEN CANDIDATE. On Friday evening a gathering of sixty guests assembled at the house party tendered in aid of the sports queen candidate at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. Crowley. During the earlier part a cards tourney was arranged, the successful lady and gentleman competitor being Mrs. T. Joyce and tlie Rev. Father N. Moore respectively. After supper the entertainment was continued ivith an impromptu programme of varied competitions and games, and another successful function terminated at a late hour w r ith sincerely expressed thanks in appreciation of the hospitality extended hv the host and hostess.
