HAWERA BAND.

BOROUGH COUNCIL’S GENEROSITY The Hawera Borough Council last night voted a further subsidy of £SO to the Municipal Band Committee, thereby bringing the total amount lor the present year up to £2OO. A deputation consisting of SergeantMajor Mahoney and Mr. W. Hawkins waited on the council and asked that the £SO already voted by the council for the purchase of the band requisites be added to the £IOO for contribution towards the bandmaster’s salary. They also asked that the council supply the band with paint to paint tlie banclroom and with timber to build a receptacle for the instruments. The deputation stated that if the band could get over the first year they would become successfully established. The band committee were of the opinion that they would have to pay £2OO for a bandmaster, but they were not asking more than £l5O from the council. Cr. Osborne said he had over £2O in hand from the old hand, which could be used in renovating the bandroom. and the Mayor said that a#previous offer of the council to provide paint still held good. Cr. Champion was in favour of granting the £l5O towards the bandmaster’s salary, and he gave notice of his intention to move at the next meeting that the council’s previous resolution be rescinded. Cr. Burdekiu moved that £SO, being the balance of the amount placed on the estimates, be handed to the band committee to do as they liked with, Cr. Brunette seconded, and on a division being taken Ors. Reid and Morrissey. were the onlv councillors voting against. . Fr. ‘Champion then withdrew his notice of motion. Cr. Morrissey thought that the resolution passed recently, voting £IOO towards a bandmaster’s salary aud £SO towards incidentals, should he rescinded. othenvisp the resolution just passed would be out of order. The Mayor ruled that the motion was in order.
