Ihe nre at Canton was confined to portions of the western district and were extinguished within twenty-four hours. Less than a twentieth part of the city was burned or looted. Many of the native banks, porcelain- shops and pawn shops were destroyed, as well as a few homes. Practically no big companies were affected. A conservative estimate of the damage is ten million dollars.

Chen Chiuiig Ming troops are reported at Shektan in the Sheklund district. Artillery fire was heard in that direction and a detachment of 50 Indian Grenadiers were despatched from Hongkong to Shamin as a precautionary measure.—Reuter..
