PERSONAL ITEMS.
Mr Charles Healey, manager of De Luxe Films of U.S.A., is in town arranging for the screening of East Lynne at the Opera House, commencing next Monday night. The death is announced from Sydney of Mr. T. F. Furber, a well-known figure in official surveying circles, who was largely instrumental in the early ’eighties in bringing about reciprocity between.the Surveyors’ Boards of. Australia and New Zealand, upon a basis which has stood the test of time. A London cable announces the death of Admiral Sir Percy Scott, aged 71. He had a distinguished naval career, doing much to improve the gunnery of the fleet. He invented the nightsignalling apparatus now' used in the Royal Navy, and various other naval appliances. He also proved exceedingly useful in the South African war, inventing the gun-carriages which enabled 6-incli and -4.7-inch guns to be used. He was made a baronet in 1913 and retired from active service. In 1915-16 he was in charge of the gunnery defences of London against aircraft attacks. A farewell social was tendered Mr. and Mrs. McDonald and family on Tuesday, 14th inst., by the Hawera Railway Social Club, and it proved to be a huge success, sixty couples taking part in the dancing. Mr. and Mrs, McDonald will be 'greatly missed by the large circle of friends they have made since they Came to the district. Mr. McDonald has been chairman of the Railway Social Club since its inception, and Mrs. McDonald has assisted the club in many ways. In recognition of the services rendered by them they were presented on behalf of the Railway Social Club with a set of aluminium saucepans for themselves and a cup and saucer for each of the children. Mr. ,T. A. Bell making the presentation, Mrs. Loader then presented Mr. McDonald with a set of military hair-brushes in case, and on behalf of the euchre players Mrs.. Vinten gave Mr. McDonald a leather suitcase. Mr. McDonald suitably replied and dancing was resumed until the early hours of the morning. Supper was provided by the ladies present, and vocal items were given by Miss Butler and Mr. Ilastie. The music for the dancing was supplied by the Premier Orchestra, i&nd extras were given by Miss Butler, Miss. K. Franks and Mr. Hafitie.
