TENNIS
A tennis enthusiast, in his pride for the sport he believes best, writes thus in a southern paper: “Cricket holds pride of place in our schools, but it could very -well be put into second place. It is quite time we considered whether, of the two games, cricket is
the better. It is possible that a visiting Martian might consider eleven men scattered over a field waiting for a ball to catch, while another nine sat under a tree, before or after a brief stay at the wickets, was the best possible sport or exercise, but it is hot likely. Games, like everything else, have at some time or another to give way to better varieties, and the development of the fast play in modern tennis is a serious challenge to cricket. It is only the fact that all Christchurch tennis clubs are overcrowded that has allowed the. increased popularity of the game to pass unnoticed. Cricket will, and should continue, but school children should have equal opportunities of playing both tennis and'cricket. ”
