FIRE TRAGEDY

AGED WOMAN’S DEATH. A SEAMAN’S GALLANTRY. BY' CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPY'EIGHT. Received Oct 18, 11.20 a.m. SYDNEY, Oct. 18. A tragic fire, resulting in the death of Mrs. C. Yates, aged 70, and the narrow escape of twin babies, occurred in a residential establishment at Darlinghurst late last night. The owner of the premises smelt smoke and rushed upstairs just in time to remove her babies. She heard a woman in a room where the seat of the fire was apparently located, and screamed for help. A passing seaman, Edward Dess, made several gallant attempts to rescue the woman. The roof fell in on him and he was* compelled to retire. By the time- the brigade arrived the room was a mass of flames and a further attempt at rescue was hopeless.
