— McDonald outpoints Parker. (by TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. DUNEDIN, Oct. 16. A professional contest for the middle weight championship to-night, between Eddie Parker (the holder, and also holder of the light-heavyweight championship) and Lachie McDonald (Australian amateur champion in the welter ranks), for a purse of £l5O, attracted a big crowd at His Majesty’s to-night. The decision went to McDonald on points. In a preliminary, Hector Leckio (9.5) beat Robbie Campbell (9.5) on points in a 10-round bout for a purse of £25. HA WEI?. A ASS DOTATION. About four hundred spectators gathered in the Winter Show buildings uist evening on the occasion of the Ha we r a Boxing Association’s spring tournament. Unnrplelo arrangements had been made, and a fine programme prepared, but influenza and other illnesses prevented some of the boys from going into the ring. The star •out listed was Duggan versus MoKnight, but the ’flu had got the latter. and ho was unable to- appear. Harlen, late of Wellington. was brought on at the last minute, and uuier the circumstances did very well indeed. Several exhibition bouts ve e ot-’ged, those between Loveridge and Higgins and Smaller and Scott especially Jbeing full of interest and '“pep.” Loveridge appeared with his ear heavily padded, ns a result of an injury got at- the recent championships in Wellington. During the evening Mr. O’Den introduced Joe Tlinnial (ex-bantam ■Lampion of Australia), who is .starting a boxing class in Rawera. and R. Scott, who announced his willingness to bo-x any middle-weight in New Zea'and. The officials proved very capable in their various positions and are to be sympathised 'with in their fight against adverse circumstances. Mr. W. R. Fnlev was referee. Messrs. Russell and Foden timekeepers, and Mr. O’Dea announcer. The following were the results: J. O’Keefe (Hawe-a), 11.4, was beaten by Goodwin (New Plymouth), 11.3. Both boys gave promise of hetfru - things, but the latter led most of the time and showed more skill. Hansen (Man-aia), 10.6, beat Coombes (Opuuake). 9.0. on points. The former will do better in future as lie displayed excellent form for a novice. Midgelev (Eltham). 8;11 drew with Morgan (Eltham), 8.8. , These youngsters showed very good form indeed, and both traded punches in great style. The verdict was a good one. Nicholas (Deo), 12.4, beat Candy (Kaponga), 11.3. v Both lads were nervous, and. not a great deal of hitting took place. • The former was the more vigorous. D. Mercer (Auroa), 8.10, beat J. Hansen (Mnnaia). 8.6, on points. The former carried the fight to his opponent all the time, but could not land his blows properly, as his opponent moved rather elusive. Mercer is not developing as rapidly as lie promised to do. Kimberlev (Otakelio) ,11.4. knocked out Long (Man a in), 11.1. This wag a good bout for a couple of rounds and good Avork was done by both boys. Kimberley swung a heavy.right at the *nd of the round which .connected with the point, and Long dropped. .He was too- groggy to come up for the third round, and his second skied the towel. Duggan (Hawera), 10.7. bent Harlen 'Wellington), 10.6, on points. This a rather di saponin ting bout, and Duggan still showed some of liis most obvious faults. Harlen was not strong enough to keep Duggan out; thus the bitter had every chance to use his body punches. Duggan scored heavily in the close work, but at long range failed lamentably to do anything worth, while. Tf Duggan could develop a punch with his left he would improve his work greatly and make himself more dangerous. Harlen disolavpd signs rd : inexperience but will ■levelon, as he shows some knowledge of boxing.
