TUG-O'-WAR TOURNEY.
KAPUNI CONTESTS. AN INTERESTING EXHIBITION. Closely-fought contests, giving splendid exhibitions of tug-of-war pulling, were witnessed by the large gathering 'of spectators in atendance at the tournament commenced in the Kapuni Hall last evening under the auspices of the city candidate’s committee contesting the Kaponga queen carnival. Seven teams nominated. The six which were paired in the first roam d were very evenly matched, and throughout each pull keen excitement prevailed. The pulls were announced as of three minutes’ duration, the issue of the first round to be decided by the best .of three, hut last evening only the team which had drawn the bye qualified for the second round. All "pulls went the full time. The results were as follow: Taungatara, represented by G. B. Bruce (skip), B. Coupe, F. Maindonald, R. Duncan, R. Maindonald, and H. H. Gilshnan, heat Kaponga^ —A. This was the most even bout of the night, the ribbon remaining unmoved until, the final 30 seconds, when Kaponga gained an inch, which Taungatara were unable trn fully recover. Railway “Midgets” heat Railway B by three inches, after having had a c - | \erhtly bigger advantage; in the early stages. Riverdale heat Railway A. W r ith the first strain the winners gained two inches, one of which they maintained at the call of time. Amid great enthusiasm Taungatara and Kaponga then fought a strenuous pull, to conclude ,in a draw. Gaining three inches at the offset, Taungatara sevei'ely handicapped their opponents, but at the end of two minutes Kaponga had recovered and held an inch, advantage. The effort, however, taxed them considerably, and with 15 seconds to. go Taungatara’,s counter strain moved the ribbon to dead centre, where it rested at full time. This concluded the bouts for the evening. On Saturday evening further exciting contests should be seen, and all of these teams will again be matched to decide the semi-final qualification, and which ever teams reach the final should provide an exceedingly interesting display. Mr. J. Paterson ('Manaia) officiated as judge and Mr, W. Slattery(Manaia) as timekeeper. The arrangements were directed by the committee secretary, Mr. . W. Melville, who wishes to. acknowledge the .valuable assistance given by the railwaymen and other Kapuni residents. During the evening a fancy work stall, conducted by Mesdames J. Bolger, PI.
