CHINESE FASCISTS.

EXTRA EDITION.

TROUBLE NEAR SHANGHAI. LONG-STANDING FUED. EY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received October 17, 2 p.m. PEKIN, Oct. 16. A Canton message states that the long-standing feud between the authorities and merchant volunteers seems to have come to. a head since the strike. The trouble has apparently grown until on. Monday the volunteers concentrated in Saikwan. the richest suburb, where the majority of merchants reside, with Sun Yat Sen’s Yunnanese mercenaries surrounding them outside. To-day several fires have broken out in Saikwan and other parts of the city. Sun-Yat Sen’s soldiers, who are openly looting, are suspected. The volunteer movement is practically a Fascist! movement, and it is supported by all Chinese merchants and shopkeepers, small and big, in Canton and district as a protection against ' the exactions of Sun Yat Sen’s Government and the tyranny and looting of his mercenaries. The naval authorities at Hongkong received a wireless message from Canton that a large fire raged all day yesterday and is now under control. The merchant volunteers had been defeated. The damage is estimated at 7,000,000 dollars and the loss of life is probably large. As a -result of the foreign authorities at Shanghai refusing to permit Little Hsu to make theInternational Settlement his headquarters. from which to create dangerous trouble among the thousands of leaderless troops inst outside the city, the situation to-day is much more hopeful, but is still complicated. Hsu is under open arrest in his house in the international Settlement, pending advices from the diplomatic body at Pekin rewhat to do with him. It appears- Kian Gsu. commander at Lunghua, remained loyal to Chi and his troops, who, according, to consular reports, went over yesterday to Hsn, and are to-day standing by their Kiang.su leader. A big effort is now beiijir made to arrange for the repatriation of various sjeaderless troops to their respective provinces. It is believed that in a few more days the whole situation near Shanghai will liquidate itself.— Reuter. Europeans arriving at Hongkong er twenty millions than seven. ' Sun er twenty millions tha. nseven. Sun at Sen’s forces used machine guns against the volunteers, barricaded in newly-widened streets.- Firing continued throughout the night, the volniiTeei’s surrendering and laying down arms during the morning. It js estimated that Sun’s forces number 40,000 against 6000 volunteers. • •Civilian casualties from .shooting and the conflagration are reckoned to exceed 1000.
