A public meeting was held last night in the C.E.M.S. .rooms. There was a good attendance. The meeting was called under the auspices of the School Committee for the purpose of forming a swimming club.for the town and to assist in popularising the school baths. Mr I. J. Bridger, chairman of the School Committee, presided, and in explaining the purpose of the meeting, stated that the school baths were built primarily for the school children’s use, but there were certain times of every day that could be allocated to the public. The . School Committee had during the last few years endeavoured to arrange suitable hours for the public, but it was considered by the committee that a swimming club would be advantageous, berth for the purpose of competitions and for boosting the baths and consequently helping to make them pay. Arrangements could be made with the School Committee witli regard to the charges and other matters. Air L. Dobson then moved- “That this meeting approves of the formation of a swimming club.” He stated that a club bad many advantages with regard to life-saving competitions, and stressed the value of swimming. Air W. Bicheno seconded the motion.

Mr J. S. Wilson thought that a. canvass should he made to, ascertain what support could be obtained from the general public. Air E. Bary also- supported this view, but strongly supported the formation of a swimming club. There would be'no difficulty with regard to the children’s hours. He thought the club would greatly assist the work with school children with regard to the teaching of swimming. The motion was then put' and carried. •

The election of officers resulted: — President. Mr A. 0. Casey (subject to acceptance); vice-presidents. Dr. Cooper, Messrs J. S. Wilson, D. Syme, J. Crabtree, F. Wilds, G. W. Tayler; secretary, Mr ‘Cowell; treasurer,’ Mr C. Burdett; general committee, Messrs McQian, Barv, Philpotts, Walsh, Bicheno, and Ward. It was decided to defer the matter of fixing the subscription until after the meeting with the School Committee. .
