NATIVE RATES.

A COMING MEASURE. (Bv Telegraph—Special to the. Star.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 15. The urgency of the question of giving local authorities fuller power to collect, rates from Native lands was raised in the House to-day by Mr Roliestou (Waitoma). He suggested that the. Native Minister should introduce his promised Bill in time to. give the local authorities the opportunity of considering and having the Bill passed this session. The Hon. J. G. Coates replied that the Bill had been drafted and w-ould be introduced early next, w-eek. Whether it. would meet all the demands w-hich had been made by the local authorities he was not able to say, but he proposed that the measure would to some extent bring the local bodies into direct contact w-itli the Natives and in many instances he knew that the- Maoris would be able to make satisfactory arrangements' with them. The Native Affairs Committee would have an opportunity of considering the Bill, but ow-ing to the late date of the session lie could not say whether there w-ould be time for much evidence if the Bill, was to pass this session.
