OPUNAKE.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) TOWN HOARD. At the last meeting of the Town Board members Air O. A. Trotter was re-elected chairman. Messrs F. Hammond, A. J. Brennan and G. Fearer were appointed a finance committee, and Messrs Munro, Mourie and Gunson works committee. The chairman’s action in entering into a lease for the picture, rights- ot the Town Hall was confirmed. The secretary of the Power Board wrote stating that Mr T. S. Hickey, recently elected to that board for the town district, had tendered his - resignation. It was resolved that Mr J. P. Burton be appointed to the position. It was resolved to make application to the Main Highways Board for assistance in the maintenance of the part of the; Main South road within the town district. ' The clerk was instructed to communicate with the proprietors of cars and ’buses running on the public services, asking them not to congregate in the main street prior to departure. ' POWER BOARD. The monthly meeting ,was held on Friday. Present; ,Alessrs C. A. Trotter (chairman), W. L. F. Chambers, J. S. Tosland, E. A. Collins, J. Hickey, J* H. Burton, and T. H. Sinclair. The question as to whether the recent election of representatives of the town district, of whom the chairman is one, did not mean that the office thereby became vacant was raised by Mr Sinclair. After some discussion it was . resolved to obtain the solicitor’s opinion thereon. To facilitate business Mr Sinclair moved that Air Trotter be appointed chairman pro tern. This, was seconded by Air Tosland and carried. Afterwards the solicitor advised that by the fact of Air Trotter’s re-election his position was continuous, and that the office of chairman was tenable by him until, the next statutory meeting for election of chairman in Alay next. The chairman moved the notice of ipotion in his name to rescind the resolution passed on August 8 agreeing to sell, power to the Taranaki Power Board. Seconded, by Mr Toslandi and carried. ' On the motion of Alessrs Tosland. and Chambers the engineer was instructed to purchase silver pine poles from the Forestry Department for erection of service lines. Correspondence was read from the board’s solicitors in connection with a claim by Mr Harrop for loss of two cows coming in. contact with a fallen live wire. The board agreed to accent liability for compensation, and * appointed Alessrs ; Collins and Tosland to confer with the claimants in an endeavour to arrive at the value of the animals lost. On the motion of Messrs Collins and Burton, Mr J. N. Stephenson, who has been acting-secretary for some months past, was appointee! to the position permanently. The action of the chairman and engineer in agreeing to assist Kaponga Board with supply of power temporarily at the rate of £lO per kilo-, watt per annum was confirmed. ,_ Th e engineer adversely reported on the decision of the hoard arrived at some months ago to sell power for cooking.- purposes at 2d per unit. A considerable demand for stores was now being made, and an unlimited demand for power for this load will probably cause some trouble if a dry period was experienced. It was resolved that the chairman, Alessrs Burton, Chambers and Sinclair, with the engineer, be a committee to go into the whole question of the cooking load and to leport at the next meeting.
