A TASK FAITHFULLY COMPLETED.
The final meeting and disbandment of the Hawera Peace Memorial Committee on Tuesday afternoon marked the end of a task well and faithfully done. When the war ended the then Mayor (Mr E„ Dixon) and a number of citizens set to work to organise a fund for Hawera’s peace memorial, and various efforts were made to raise the money. Eor some time difficulty was experienced in' arranging for an ex change of sites, and it took months of negotiating with. Government Departments before the exchange was agreed to and the police residence and lock-up were removed. The exchange of sites, however, enabled the excellent arrangement to be made to have the Returned Soldiers ’ Club and the Memorial Arch erected close, together, and to provide for Municipal Chambers to be built near by at some future date. The Arch, which was unveiled by the Prime Minister on ‘June 11 last, stands as a permanent remembrance, and the Peace Memorial Committee and citizens are to be congratulated upon the work. The decision at Tuesday ’s final meeting to place the balance of the fund (£ll4 14s 4d) in the Post Office to be used for maintenance of the Arch is a good one, and it. should ensure that the memorial will be fittingly looked after in the years to come.
