POLICE AT THE PLAY.
ACTRESS AND TIER SCANTY DRESS. NEW YORK, Sept. 24. Following a conference at police headquarters, several detectives attended performances of two leading Broadway slioavs, “What Price, Glory?’ and ‘ ‘ Vanities. ’ ’ | The former is a Avar drama behind j the lines in France. Presumably the j police objected to the profanity. j The detectives remained at the back of the stage, accompanied by stenographers. but after the slioav the police inspector said: “Either the show was misrepresented or I did not see all. • Mr Alt Hopkins, the producer, said he had deleted 20 Avnrds of profanity rather than have arrests made. Bui he intended to test his rights in the courts. • The play “Vanities' Avas observed bv detectives because of complaints that Miss Kathryn Ray. the priniepal actress, Avas inadequately dressed. According to the New York World, Miss Ray wears only a covering about the Avaist, but her nudity is somewhat concealed by a gauze curtain. ' Mr Earl Carroll, producer of “Vanities,” says the play is perfectly proper. Miss Ray says she is surprised that any exception is taken to her act.
