’An eel weighing eighteen pounds, and of a total length of five feet three inches, was secured on a gaff by Mr. L. Humphries in the Ohau Kiver, at the top of Kimberley Road, Levin ,_ the other day (says the Chronicle) The eel, which was of the silver belted variety, had a- girth of 1/inches. As may be imagined, he took some landing, breaking the handle of the gaff and escaping once, but was secured again from beneath ,a log, where he had taken refuge. The folly of carelessness in handling benzine was again forcibly illustrated recently in a Napier household, where a young lady was subjecting a frock to the popular benzine-cleaning process. .Following the cleansing, she suspended the damp, garment in„ the bathroom, and later, despite warnings, walked in with a lighted candle. A girl companion followed her to warn her of the danger, but almost immediately there was a burst of flame. The first girl, the one with the candle, escaped injury, but the second was immediately ablaze, her blouse- and hair burning freely. With commendable presence of mind, however, she pulled a heavy coat round her head and shoulders, and thus extinguished the flames, though not before she was so badly burned about the face, neck and hands that medical attention was necessitated.
