A youthful-looking defendant in the Auckland Magistrate’s Court gave the somewhat surprising evidence that he was the father of eight children whose support he was responsible for (reports the Star). His salary was under £0 i week, and he had to pay £2 a week rent. He had borrowed money to try tc. pay off some of his debts, and had only got further into the mire by doing so. “No order.” said the magistrate. “This man has eight children md pays £2 a week rent. That only ’eaves him £4 a week or less to feed and clothe ten people on. That’s not much.” An extraordinary sale at liberal discounts of costumes, frocks, millinery, hosiery and underclothing will be held by Mrs Peters on the premises in Gillanders’ Buildings, ITiiion street. A very fine range is on view, and intending purchasers are invited to inspect. The sale begins on Saturday morning at 9 o’clock.
