AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION.
MEETING AT ELTHAM. BRANCH FORMED. Tu response to the request of the Hayor to hold a public meeting in Lltham, a good number of citizens assembled. at the Borough Chambers last night to consider the formation of"a branch of the South Taranaki Automobile Association. Mr. Tristram explained at the outset that the Mayor, who had called the ' meet in owas prevented by illness in his family from being present. On his motion , • A - Ciump was voted to the chair. Mr. Crump, in a feu- preliminary remarks, said that a feiv years ago he and others had endeavoured to amalgamate the forces of motoring, and lie had discussed Avith Mr. A. W. Webster and others ] 10 w the matter could best .-be done. They found, hoAveA r er, that they Avere not sufficiently strong, and 'the moA r ement lapsed. He said that they Avere pleased to know that the North and South Taranaki Associations Avere now functioning, and belkwcd that there xvas no doubt a branch AA’oitld be formed in Eltham. The meeting Ai'a.s addressed by Dr. Thomson, Dr. McGhie, Messrs. W. P. Cox and W. O’Callaghan *on lines similar to those taken at other places, urging the need of union amongst motorists, uniform by-laws, hotel tariffs, parking of ears,' safety first campaign, prevention of accidents, education of motorists re rules of the road, instructing children in this matter,' benefits of the R.A.C. and Auto Association in England, signpost on • roads, local advantages and benefits. In regard to subscription, Dr. Thomson stated that they bad been advised by Wellington that the fee is £1 Is, in addition to the cost of the badge. A letter Avas lead from the Wellington Association urging Eltham to link up with Wellington or Avith the district association. He added that a specimen badge was sent rdiowing that the New Zealand Automobile Union. Avas affiliated Avith the R.A.C. of England. On the motion of Mr. J. Tristram, seconded by. Mr. Forsyth, it A\ r as. decided to form a branch of the South Taranaki Association in Eltham. Officers Avere then elected as folloAV: President, Mr. T. B. Crump; Aucepresidents, Messrs. W. J. Tristram, M. McGarry; secretary and treasurer, Mr. C. Harrison; executive. Messrs. G. H. White, J. L. Campbell, A. O. Casey, Wilson and E. Crabtree. In accepting the position, Mr. Crump thanked members for the honour and privilege and assured them all that he was keenly interested in the Movement- and Avould . do all in his power to further the interests of the association. The matter of appointing delegates to the parent association Avas left to the executive. On the motion of the chairman, a hearty vote of thanks Avas passed to the members of the association from Uinvera, who bad (time to assist in the formation of a branch. A vote of thanks ‘to the chair and :o the Borough Council for use of the room concluded a very good meeting.
