A \ isitor to Greymouth had a narrow escape from death last week. The nian, who was apparently under the influence of liquor, was lying across the railway lines near the'wharf, and a shunting engine was pulled up .just in time to prevent it running over him. The cow-catcher had passed over him, and the front wheels of the engine were actually touching the man when the locomotive was brought to a standstill. Th© present spell of humid weather evidently (remarks the Waikato Times) has a drowsy effect upon some of the railway porters, as soon after the Whanganmrino incident, when the Main Trunk express was held up for some considerable time while the crew went out to wake up the tablet porter, comes the happening of Sunday, when the express had to wait about an hour and 2-0 minutes at Huntlv for the signal from Ngaruawahia. Whether the tablet porter slept in or forgot about the train is not known, but lie- certainly did not make himself popular with the Hamilton nassengers, who. instead of getting home about 10 p.m., were delayed until 11.15 p.nj.
