EARTH’S POPULATION IN A.D. 3000. COLOUR PERIL. TORONTO, Aug. 7. “Standing room on the earth will be full up in the year 3000, when the population; will be 700,000,000,000’,” said Professor J. W. Gregory at .today’s sitting of the British Association’s conference here. The former prestige and- personal authority of the white man nas undergone a momentous decline. “White colonists have no chance of permanently occupying land near the overclouded parts of Asia or accessiblo to the fast multiplying negroes of Africa. White merchants may find in these regions, profitable trading centres, and may for a time rule and administer them; hut when white enterprise has subdued the land, built railways, and utilised the rivers, the coloured man will oust the white from all but the few nosts that require experts. . NEGRO WORKERS“In South Africa particularly the maintenance of white supremacy, and even of a white Afrikander neonle. is doubtful. The spectre in South Africa is the steady replacement of white workers by negroes and htff-castes in the skilled occupations. Australia will throw .away a golden opportunity if it fails to make patient effort to secure the whole continent as the hopie of the white race.”
