CANTERBURY MARKETS. (by TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 10. As is usual at this period of the year, very little business is being done at the moment, and only a few lines are being inquired for to any extent. The potato market is particularly hat. Nothing has been shipped north for about a week, and since then the business done has been of a negligible nature. One of the reasons for this is that owing to warmer weather now being experienced it is necessary, if potatoes are to be prevented from sprouting, that they should be budded. In any case very few potatoes are now held by farmers. It is reported that a line of f.a.q.’s reds were sold to-da.v at £4 10s f.o.b. sacks in, but generally speaking what few sales are being made are on a basis of £5 to farmers. There is a good demand for seed potatoes, which are equal in value to table potatoes. ' The Navua is expected to get away . for Auckland early next week, but it is unlikely that any kua-j quantity will be shipped by her." Cowgrass is one of the lines which show a little life and some firmness, but no advance in price has been recorded. There is not a great deal of clover about to meet the demand being made for this line. Partridge peas are being quoted to farmers from 6 s to 6s 6d, and for this line fair inquiry has been experienced. The last few days have also seen a more spirited demand for. cocksfoot, although it can not be said that a great deal of oddi tional business has resulted from it. Regarding wheat, it is stated a few farmers are still holding some, but in most cases thev are asking more than it is worth. A part shipment of Aus tralian wheat is expected in a day or two by the Kaikorai. CLEARING SALE.
