BOARDING-HOUSE BURNED. SOME! NARROW ESCAPES. (by TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. : ! i 1 WELLINGTON, Oct. 10. A j sixteen-roomed boarding-house occupied,- by Mrs. McArthur, . and owned by Dawn Brothers, was totally destroyed by fire between 9 and 10 tonight. Three men —J. Fraser, W. Shield, and Don —escaped by jumping from/the balcony on to a lean-to, and they? , caught an elderly man as he jumped from -.he balcony. An excited crowd watched narrow escapes. The fire is believed to have commenced downstairs, but in a few minutes the whole was involved. Tlie . brigade subdued the fire under an hour, but only the shell remained; A bank collapsed owing to the water, throwing two firemen into the road, but they escaped injury. The insurances are not yet known.
