The New Zealanders had a successful day. They won all the events in which they started. Only four horses faced the starter in the Craven Plate. Ballymena jumped out from the start, followed by David, Gloaming, and Nigger Minstrel. The first two increased their lead going along the back, Ballymena being two lengths ahead of David. Nigger Minstrel drew level with Gloaming, hut the latter commenced to come up at the distance, overtaking David on entering the straight. Then Gloaming went to the front and won without being pushed, despite Ballymena’s strong effort to keep up. Nigger Minstrel finished half a length behind David. Gloaming had an enthusiastic reception on returning to the scales. Love Box took up the l-unning early in the Gimcraclc Stakes, Chignon holding a handy position... On entering t-lie straight Chignon took charge and managed to stave off all challengers. Currency was never prominent and finished fifth to last. CHffdale led nearly all the way in the Suburban Handicap. Going along the back The Monk was lying second, but dropped hack at the turn at the St. Leger, and Rahui took over from CHffdale. Then The Monk made a great run on the outside and won nicely. The Members’ Handicap wa s run m slow, time, and the pace just suited Loquat, who held a handy position on entering the straight, when he came away to nun well after being challenged by Allison and Royan. This made jockey Young’s third win for the day, the sixth for the meeting, and the eleventh since his arrival from the
