PARK CLUB. 1 _____ Owing to heavy rain setting in about 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon, the official opening of the green in the usual manner had to be abandoned, although there were bowlers present as far afield as- New Plymouth. The president (Mr C. It. Stannand), in a few remarks, regretted that the weather had marred what would otherwise have been a most- enjoyable afternoon. He expressed the pleasure of Park Club at seeing visitors at any time, and trusted as the season advanced that many friendly games would be played. The president then declared . Park green open for the season, the jack having to be thrown up by Miss Stannard in heavy rain. Afternoon tea was then dispensed by a number of ladies, and the visitors left quite satisfied with the hospitality extended to them. Several telegrams were received by the secretary wishing the club a prosperous season. RAWER A CLUB. VISITORS GET A GAME. Although the rain marred play at the official opening hour the opportunity came later. When afternoon tea Avas over the weather signs of clearing, and it Avas not long before expectations AA-ere realised, for the clouds gradually dispersed and revealed Taranaki’s silent monitor (Mount Egmont) enshrined Avith the sun’s golden rays. With sudden enthusiasm the neAvs Avas passed round “We’ll get a game.” The green having quickly absorbed the rain, the Green Committee decided to alloAv play. As there were quite a number of visitors from near and far-aAvay chibs, this arrangement Avas A-ery much appreciated by them, and by 3.30 there Avere five rinks in full sAving, all apparently entering fully into the enjoyment of the game. Considering that heavy rain Avas falling an hour previously, the green played remarkably Avell, much to the surprise of players. The usual match, President v. Vice-President, having been abandoned, a series of friendly games Avere indulged in, Avith the following results: Winter, Shaw, Poole, R. Hicks 13; McDonald, Verry, junr., 01iA r er, J. Verry 15.
