BOWLING.
KAPONGA GREEN. PLAYABLE IN NOVEMBER*^ A meeting of the Executive Committee of the Kaponga. Bowling Club was held last evening. Air A. E. Anderson (president) occupied the chair, others present being: Messrs A. Y. Taft, C. S. Hill, J. J. Davison. H. H. Henderson, D. P. F. Malone, C. Crow*esh G. Smith and J[. Hessell (hon. secretary). The chairman intimated that in company with other members he had recently inspected the green. Its condition was considered to be quite satisfactory, and reflected great credit on the work of the contractor, Air F. H. Alorgan. It was anticipated that the gieen would be available to mehibers tor play by about the middle of NoV6mb<si , but as at that time the ersction of the pavilion and certain other work would still require to be completed, the official opening ceremony would probably not take place before the beginning of the new year. Invitations were received from the Haw ei a, Eltham, Park (Hawera), Aianaia, Pihama and Opunake Clubs to be present at the opening of the respective greens this season. Air Henderson reported that delivery of a mower had been received and a roller which was being made to order should be available in approximatelv two weeks’ time.
A tender for the erection of a payilion 30ft by 12ft, with partitions at both ends, the estimated * cost bein» £142 15s, was received from Alessrs D. H. Briggs and Son (Kanonga). The site of the pavilion, which would face the green, would be on the southern side. By invitation Air D. H. Briggs attended the meeting and supplied further information. The erection of an iron fence‘across the ground in rear of the pavilion site was considered, but the project was abandoned, as the expense could not be undertaken at present. After the withdrawal of Air Briggs the secretary reviewed the club’s position, and suggested that a smaller pavilion which would be more economical in construction might meet the requirements. After a lengthy discussion members were of the opinion that, allowing for tho necessary accommodation, commensurate economy could not be obtained by curtailing the dimensions, and on the. motion of Alessrs Henderson and Davison the secretary was authorised to negotiate with Messrs Briggs and Son for the erection of the pavilion in accordance with the original specifications. The secretary reported that a donation of £5 to the club funds had been -received from Air AY. Lambie, Consideration was given to the appointment of a permanent caretaker of the green. Air Hill said he understood that Air F. Alartin, who possessed a knowledge of the work and had already gfven service in attending to the green, would; be willing to undertake the caretaker’s duties.—To put the matter in order, the chairman proposed that applications be called for. It was finally decided to employ casual labour in the meantime, and to call for applications for the position at a la,ter date. It was decided to hold the annual meeting on November 10, the secretary being authorised to advertise the meeting through the press. Air C. H- Severne was appointed auditor.
Air Davison intimated that if the numbers were sufficient and members would act together it would be possible to obtain bowls through the agents at a rate showing an appreciable reduction in the individual charge.
