3VIANAIA BRANCH. (From Our Own Ccrerspondent). The October meeting of the Manaia branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held on Saturday last-. Mr J. T. Clague presided. A letter was received and read from Mr 0. Hawken, M.P., re tyre tax under the Main Highways Bill. The writer expressed his sympathy with the resolution sent from tliis branch, and intimated that a board of inquiry had been set up to take evidence and investigate this matter. It was expected that their work would result in a mere equitable tax. The relieving organiser for Taranaki forwarded list of new members enrolled who, under the new system, had signed an order individually to deduct the annual subscription from the milk cheque. The secretary was instructed to write to the provincial executive expressing dissatisfaction with the present way of canvassing for members here and there, but favoured a farm to farm canvass.. It was resolved to inquire from the Defence Department as to. whether farm employees up to certain ages could fulfil their military obligations during the winter time ( in lieu (cf spring training, as the same caused great inconvenience at such a busy time of the dairying season. Entries for mangolds, carrots, swedes, and lucerne crops close- finally at November meeting, the chairman advising members to try and secure as niany entries as possible, thus affording keener competition.
