HOME-MADE PETROL.
CHEAP MOTOR SPIRIT. A GREAT DISCOVERY. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. PARIS, October 5. Intense interest is manifested in the industrial world in a process for the manufacture of artificial petroleum. Professor Mailkes, during experiments at Bue, near Paris, showed that a stationary motor ran perfectly with a synthetic petroleum, made from a basis of water and gas. Later the first motorcar which arrived in Rue was stopped, the petroleum was taken cut, and the new fuel was put in. The car was restarted and it ran with perlect ease. The only raw material required is lignite coal, which is a valueless waste product from peat. Sawdust may also be utilised. It is estimated that it will be possible to maufacture it at 75 centimes a litre, compared with one franc* and 75 centimes, which is the cost of a litre of motor spirit. The plant ■required is simple, being merely a boiler capable of being heated to 400 degrees.
