HARBOUR BOARD RATES.
BOROUGH PAYING TOO MUCH. COMMENTS BY COUNCILLORS. The striking of another, rate this year by* the Patea Harbour Board was commented on at last night’s meeting of the Hawera Borough Council. Cr Morrissey, who introduced the matter, said that on the hew valuation last year the Hawera Borough had paid to the Harbour Board £3OO more than previously under the old rating. Last year the Council had written to the Harbour Board pointing this out, and the Board had replied stating that they would probably not he collecting a rate this year. The matter had been dropped at that, but this year the rate had been struck again. Cr Morrissey said he noted in a report of one of the Harbour Board meetings that the reason why the rate was being struck this year was that they had not been able to collect a dumber of last vear’s rates. ‘ * Firstly, ’ ’ said Cr Morrissey, “ they have no right to collect more than is necessary, and secondly they are entitled to collect any money owing to them.” ‘ “We are undoubtedly paying too much under our new valuation,” said Cr Townsend. The town clerk was instructed to write to the Harbour Board drawing attention to their letter of last year.
