Summer. A.J.C. RACES. HEROIC WINS CLASSIC EVENT. GLOAMING’S EAST VICTORY. IN SPRING STAKES. CABLE—PRESS VsSOCJ ATI ON—COPYRIGHT SYDNEY, Oct. 5. The first day of the Australian Jockey Club’s spring meeting was held yesterday. Light rain fell tit intervals during the afternoon, but it, wa« insufficient to cause much discomfort, interfere with the racing or damage the tracks. Close on 80,000 people were present: Heroic and Gloaming were the heroes of the day. The former's triumph is worthy of the most classic contests. Gloaming received wonderful and prolonged cheering, oven by those financially injured by his success. New Zealand jockeys rode three winners, Young (two), and C. Reed (on Sea Risk) one. 'The .stewards held an inquiry regarding Nigger Minstrel being bumped by Solidify shortly after the‘start of the Derby, but found no fault with Brown, the rider of Solidify, who did Ins best to keep his mount out. Reed confirmed this. The results are : First Hurdle Race.—Troubadoi* 11.4 1, -Whyba 11.0.2, Carlisle 9.5 3. Ten starters. Greenspark went to the front and established a lead of six lengths. Whyba led in the straight, but was overtaken by Troubador, who won with its rider looking round, by two and a half - lengths. Time, 3.42. Trial Stakes.—Wild Goose 8.10 1, Brown Rajah 8.3 2, The Wraith 8.5 3. Twelve started. Entering the straight the field was bunched, Brown Rajah shooting to the front at the lialf distance. Wild Goose, by an astonishing spurt over, the last half furlong, stole a victory by 'a head. Time, 2.7. A.J.C. Derby.—Heroic (Cairns)’ 8.10 1» N fgger Minstrel (Ashley Reed) 8.10 2, Spearfelt (Brace) 8.10 3. Other starters were : Solidify, Sir Dighlock, Nocitur, Arenda. • Heroic was left at the barrier a couple of lengths. Nigger Minstrel was interfered with throuo-h Solidify veering towards the rail’s. Sir Dighlock' went to the front and stole , a march on the field, being ten lengths ahead at the mile post. This v:as increased to fifteen lengths, and the further the race went the more the leader seemed to increase its advantage, with Nigger Minstrel leading the rest of the field, which made no apparent effort to move up. Heroic, moving , fast from the rear, took the field along rounding the bend, Nigger Minstrel and Spearlelt following close. Sir Dighlock entered the straight six lengths, in front, but was overtaken at the distance. Then commenced one of the most titanic struggles witnessed at Rand wick between Heroic, Nigger Minstrel and Spearfelt. The New Zealander threw out a determined challenge a furlong from the post, whilst Spearfelt also finished full of running. Heroic, however, had sufficient in hand and won by a head, with a head separating second and third. Time, .2,34. Epsom Handicap—Black Adder (Young) 6.1 1, All Home (Harris) 7.9 2, Trimacre (Toohey) 8.9 3. All the acceptors started. Triinacre, Cliffdale, The Monk, Duke Isinglass, Danur and Collaroi, with Black Adder about eighth, was the order as the field moved off. There was little change till entering the straight, Black Adder and All Home improving their positions. Black Adder was third into the straight and at the distance was iii front. Young simply sat on him till the post was passed. The real fight ensued between the remainder of the candidates for places. Won by one and a- Half lengths, threequarters of a. length betw'een second and third. Time, 1.38. Spring Stakes. —Gloaming (Young) 9.3 1, David (Brown) 9.6 2, Ballymena (Con. Reed) 8.11 3. All the acceptors started. Gloaming was applauded on going to the post, the great crowd hoping to, win in view of eclipsing Eu rythmic’s record stakes. David took up the running, closely attended by Ballymena. Approaching the mile Gloaming moved into second place. At the half-mile Gloaming and David w T ere together, and entering the straight it was obvious that Gloaming was assured of an easy victory, and he w T on as he liked by one and a half lengths, the same distance separating second and third. Time, 2.37. • Squatters’ Handicap.—Sea Risk 7.6 1, Irish Rhythm 5.7 2. Master Cagou 7.10 3. Eleven started. Won by half a neck. Time, 2.6. TRIBUTE TO GLOAMING. , SYDNEY, Oct. 5. The Sun says that Mason had in his pocket two rosy red apples for Gloaming after the Spring Stakes, and the old fellow earned them. By doing so he placed himself on a pedestal as the greatest stake winner on the Australian turf. He lias won £37,058. compared with. Eurythmic’s £38,891, and as the old gelding is sound as a bell, he is likely to win many thousands yet. The Sunday News sav s that as it took! 56 seconds to run the first halfmile, and nearly two minutes to complete the first nine, furlongs, the race was run to suit Gloaming right down to the ground. The old horse is probably the greatest favourite the Sydney public has ever known, and deserves it all. THE A. J.C. MEETING. NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By ~P?R .F.) The racing at Randwick on Saturday held great interest for New - Zealanders on account of the presence of Gloaming, Nigger Minstrel and Ballymena. The first-nained’s win in the Spring Stakes brought him up into the proud position of first in the matter of

greatest amount of stakes won by any horse in Australasia. His total now reads as £37,058 as against Eurythmic’s £36,891 and Carbine’s £29,000. Included in Carbine’s total is the. Melbourne Cup of 1890, which amounted to £13,000. Gloaming’s record now r as compared to Eurythmic is: Eurythmic: 47 starts, 30V wins, 6 seconds, 4 thirds; won £36,891. Gloaming : 80 starts, 50 wins, 9 seconds; won £37,058. Gloaming leads by £167. Gloaming beat David by one and a half lengths, therefore it can safely be said that his wonderful finishing run is still a potent factor. ..The Derby result, while disappointing inasmuch that Nigger Minstrel did not get his head in front of Heroic, nevertheless proved the New Zealand colt to be of high class, and the time —2.34—shows that it was a true run race. As heads only separated the nlaced horses, the finish must have been of the most thrilling description, and will make heads nod in earnest in years to c-ome while race-goers are recounting the details of wonderful races they have seen.- Heroic’s breeding is of the best, and his young sire Valais has come to' the front with a bound. His dam, Chersonese, comes of Lord Rbsebery’s wonderful Paraffin family. Nigger Minstrel, as is well known, is a full brother to Desert Gold and bids fair to make as great a name as liis famous Spearfelt is by Spearhead, a 1 son of Spearmint, Carbine's greatest son. Another point of interest regarding Spearhead is that his dam, Baroness la Flecke, is a. daughter of the famous la Flecke, ‘probably one of the three greatest mares in racing history. The Bend Or line captured the three great events through Black Adder (by The ’Welkin) the Epsom Gloaming (by The Welkin) the Spring Stakes, and Heroic (by Valais) the Derby. RACING IN VICTORIA.
