RUGBY. PRIMARY SCHOOLS’ JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. WON BY OPUNAKE. At Ivaponga on Saturday, playing off for the Taranaki primary schools’ junior championship, carrying with it the McLeod Shield, Opunake defeated Wharehuia and Midhirst combined (the 1923 champions) by six points to three. The game afforded a good exhibition of Rugby, and was evenly contested, though Opunake maintained a slight superiority in back play, to which their victory was due. _ Early in the first spell,. Alan Sinclair finished a good passing movement by scoring Opunake’s first try, which was not converted, and a few minutes before halftime another nassing bout by the Opunake backs allowed Jim Robinson to secure the second unconverted try. Play was very even in the second spell, no further score being registered until, within a moment of full time, a lineout close to Opunake’s line gave possession to the Wharehuia-Midhirst forwards, who swarmed over for an unconverted try. Mr J. Christie was referee. It is of interest to note that a large share of the coaching of the Whare-huia-Midhirst team was undertaken by Miss Sartori, head mistress of the Wharehuia school. Opunake were coached by Messrs H. Sinclair and P. M. Brooker. The standard of play reflects much credit on the work' of the coaches and the attention given by the players to their instruction.
