. ♦ ■ (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) GISBORNE, Oct. 6. The Poverty Bay golf championship was won by G. M. Dodgshun. ELTHAM V. NEW PLYMOUTH. A team of fourteen players' from Eltham played a match with New Plymouth on the Waiwakaiho links, and after a series of very interesting matches the result was in favour of the home team by ten matches to three, one being halved. Results (Eltham players being mentioned first): — Morning. L. and J. Quin defeated P. Grey and F. S. Johns, 3 and 2. Dale and Stewart lost to Bewley and Hassel, 1 up. Turner and Carey and Elliot and Fuller, all square. Wild and Carter lost to Andrews and T. G. Thomsen, 6 up and 5. Phillips and F. Belcher lost to Grayline and Renner, 3 up and 2. Dobson and Best Lost to Anderson and Quilliam, 8 and (5. Campbell and A. Belcher lost to McClune and Dalgleish, 6 and 5. Afternoon. L. and J. Quin defeated P. Grey and F. S. Johns, 4 up and 3. Dale and Stewart lost to Hasell and Bewley, 2 up. Turner and Carter lost to Andrews and Duff, 5 up and 3. Phillips and F. Belcher lost to Grayling and Renner, 5 and 4. Dobson and Best lost to Anderson and Quilliam, 7 and 5. CampbelL and A. Belcher lost to McChrne and Dalgleish 3 and 1. MEN’S GOLF CLUB. WAVERLEY VISIT HAWERA. The longest team Waverley have ever brought out visited Hawera on Saturday and enjo3 7 ed a club match with the local players. The day was fine, and, save for a little too much grass in places, the course was very good and the greens were excellent. The match created keen interest, and after a series of matches, mosbf of which were very close, it resulted in a good win for Hawera. Results were as below, Waverley being mentioned first in each case: Wybourne 0 v. L. 'Quin 1; Muir 0 v. J.. Quin 1; Aiken 0 v. O’Callaghan 1; Parsons 0 v. Beechey 1- Johnstone 0 v. Ryan 1; Bradmore 1 v. Bay ley 0; Palmer 0 v. Cox 1; Fox 0 v. Fletcher 1; Wicks 0 v. Little 1; Handley 0 v. Hay-Mackenzie 1. Before the visitors left, their captain expressed the very great pleasure with which his team always looked to the annual match with Hawera, and said that the present match, though they had been beaten badly, but in many cases by a very small margin, had been one of the most enjoyable. Tlie president of the Hawera Club (Mi- E. C. Fletcher), in acknowledging that the pleasure felt by Waverley in the match was mutual, said that Hawera were always delighted to meet them, and looked forward to many more enjoyable inter-club games in the future. He said that every member of the Hawera Club heartily reciprocated the kindly sentiments expressed by the Waverley skipper. Hearty cheers were exchanged by tlic' members, and the visitors then left for their homes, after a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB. F. QUIN CHAMPION. . After defeating F. S. Johns in the semi-finals, F. Quin met A. Smith in the final, and after a great struggle, in which the fortunes alternated during the day, lie beat A. Smith by three up and one to play. In the morning the latter was playing better golf, and twice during the round was two up, finishing one up. Quin evened at the first hole in the second round, and at the fourth was one up. Weak putting by Smith let him in again at the fifth, and he held the lead throughout, being dormy two at the sixteenth. He won the next in a pretty four, and the match three up and one to play.
