DRIVERS AND FIREMEN. INCREASED WAGES. (By Telegraph—Special to the Star.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 4. Engine-drivers and firemen on the New Zealand railways have been informed that the Government has agreed to an increase in their wages of one shilling per day. This will reinstate , the locomotive section of the service in the position reached by prior reductions. Under the Public Expenditure Adjustment Act locomotive employees were reduced Is per day, -when other sections had Is 8d deducted, the difference of 8d in the case of enginedrivers and firemen being made up by themen working an extra ten minutes daily on account of dirty coal. It is expected that when the Railways Amendment Bill passes the increase will be authorised under its terms by an O.rder-in-Council without the necessity of having the matter reviewed by Parliament.
