. SPORTS’ CANDIDATE. SUCCESSFUL GARDEN FETE. Though the threatening weather doubtless kept away many who* might otherwise haVe been present, the garden fete held yesterday in tne Convent school grounds with, the object of assisting tne candidate of the sports’ committee’s nominee, Miss M. Crowley, attracted a large number of patrons, and secured results which would amply reward" the lion, secertary, Air D. F. E. Malone, and £hose associated with him in .its' organisation..' ' During the afternoon a baby show, including five classes for different ages, .attracted numerous entries and vied for pride of place in popular opinion with the tennis tournament, which was contested by nine pairs of players. Liberal prizes were, awarded in the baby show, and in the tennis tournament the successful lady and gentleman player were respectively awarded a .Boulton salad bowl and a gold medal, the latter trophy being donated by Mr 8. Lissaman (Kaponga). . Assisting the results of these principal attractions were stalls and numerous competitions. Aiesdames J. Harper, P. O’Dowd and Miss Murphy conducted a sweets stall, and on a neighbouring stand 'many dainty examples of fancy work were offered for all by Mrs C. Crowley. The afternoon tea tables, onesided over by Aiesdames D. P. F. Ala lone, Jas. Kissick and Miss Brown, rendered a popular service. lVlrs P. and Miss Hammersley, as purveyors of surprise packets, retailed articles which-justified, their designation. A competition for a turkey was won by Airs Doyle (Rowan). Dr. J. R. Boyd (Kaponga), who officiated as judge of the baby show, made complimentary reference respecting the healthy infants upon whom he was called to pronounce judgment, and experienced great difficulty in making his awards, which were as follow: Six months and under—Won by Baby Jack (3 months), son of Mr and Mrs W. Haworth (Aurqa). Six to 12 months—Baby Bruce (9 months), son of Air and Airs AI. P. Comerford (Hawera). 12 to 18 months—Baby Jim (18 months), son of Air and Mrs H. J. Burrows (Kaponga). 18 to 30 months-—Baby Stemuer (22 months), .son of Mr and’Mr s C.' Stemper (Okaiawa). Consultation prize, 21 months and under—Baby Jack (12 months), son of Air and Mrs W. Walsh (Okaiawa). The issue, of the tennis tournament was decided in matches of 30 points up. Keen contests, creating marked attention, ruled throughout. In the final Miss K. Carev and Mr J. Lennane (handicap 3) were opposed by Airs W. B. Fearon and Air D. Fitzgerald (4), the contestants providing an even exhibition, which sustained interest from the commencement of the match until the scoring of the last point, making the scores 30 —27, gave victory to Aliss Carey and Lennone. Results of matches preceding the final were as follow: First round—Aliss AI. O'Dowd and J Carey (hep. 6) 30, v. Sirs and Air W Granfel (3), 12; Aliss E. Wood and A. Wood (2) 30, v. Aliss I. O’Dowd and C. Paterson (scr) 21; Aliss K. Carey and J. Lennane (3) 30, v. Airs P. O’Dowd and T. Hammersley (7) 23; Airs W B Fearon and D. Fitzgerald (4) 30,’ v. Airs W. Freeman and G. Paterson (7) 26: Airs C. Aiarx and F. J. Shearer (2) a bye. Second round—Aliss K. Carey and J Jennane 30. v. Miss AI. O’Dowd and .T Carey 29; Mr 3 W. B. Fearon and D 1 ltzgerald 30 v. Airs C. Aiarx and F. J Shearer 23; Aliss E. Wood and A. wood, a bye. Semi-final.—Aliss K. Carev and J Lennane 30 v. Aliss Wood and A. Wood 23: Airs W. B. Fearon and D. Fitzgerald, a bye. Alessrs Fitzgerald, Lennane and .Shearer were umpires. The fets concluded with an enjoyable dance .m the schoolroom during the evening. Airs C. Evans provided appreciative music, and Air P. Hammersley as AI.C. arranged a well-bal-anced programme. A dainty supper was provided by the ladies committee, and shortly after midnight the last waltz terminated one of the most popular efforts of the carnival campaign.
