The death occurred on Saturday last at Dalefield, Wairarapa, of Mr. William Abbott, who was born in Wellington in 1848. He went to the Wairarapa. with his parents in 1859, the family settling at Featherston and assisting in the development of that town. Later the deceased resided at Belvedere, Carterton, and some 28years ago took up a farm at Dalefield.' At the time of the Maori troubles in 1861, when about 14 years of age, he and Mr. R. E. Blade (of South Carterton), who was 15, were set as guard over an ammunition depot at Featherston — their sole arms being big sticks.
