HAWERA SCOTTISH SOCIETY.
SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. Under the chairmanship of chieftain ■W- G. Simpson the Hawera Scottish Society held- another most successful gathering on Wednesday evening. The Foresters’ Halt was crowded, and mem-r bers thoroughly enjoyed the most excellent programme which had been provided. Tlie society is the fortunate possessor of a. 'most enthusiastic musician in Mr. T. B. McConnell, and the work done by the orchestra and choir under his i baton reflected the greatest credit on I the members. Every gathering has shown steady progress, and given more time it will he seen that, even if no other developments occurred, the society will have justified its existence. The orchestra, which now numbers | twenty-five instruments, rendered “Rob Roy” and ' “The Cottar’s Saturday Night,” while the choir of over fifty voices gave “My Love,” “Corn Rigs,” “Ye Banks and Braes” and ’ “Green Grow the Rashes, O.” The following songs were sung: “Coinin’ through the rye,” Mrs. Yearbury; “Break o’ day,” Miss Tait; “Skye boat song,” Miss Youug; “Robin Adair,” Miss Bissett; “Sweet and low,” Mrs. Sunderland; “Lass o’ Ballochmyle,” Mr. Buchan; “John Grumlie,” Mr. L. A, Taylor. A quartette, consisting of--Mrs. Twaddle. Miss Young, and Messrs Simpson and Buchan, sang “O’ a’ the Airts,” while Miss Young and Mi*. Simpson sang the duet “Tlie Crookit Bawbee.” Mrs. Twaddle and Mr. McCormick rendered amusing elocutionary items, which were much appreciated. An address on Scottish drama was given by Chieftain Simpson, who dealt in a very interesting manner with the problems of the drama in Scotland. In spite of a rather sparse field in which to work, the speaker gave a great deal of information. and another mark to the good work done by the society in the realm of literature. Supper was provided by the ladies, and the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” brought a splendid evening to a close. The text of Mr. Simpson’s address will be printed in a later issue of the Star.
