Much interest centred in a poll taken yesterday tiy the Matamata County Council for its proposed loan of £201,000, of which £160,000 is for the main county roads and the balance for the repayment of special loans. The poll was carried by 582 votes to 236. HOTEL AND READING ROOM .DESTROYED. HOKITIKA' Oct 2. The Commercial Hotel at Rimu and the reading room adjoining were destroyed by fire at four o’clock this morning. Adjoining premises were badly scorched. Very 'little furniture was saved: Mr. W. E. Rennison, the licensee*, had only been in possession, a few months. CUSTOMS REVENUE. WANGANUI, Oct. 2. * The customs revenue for the September quarter was £32,028. For the nine months the total was £98,038, an increase of £12,395 over the corresponding period last year. Building permits for last quarter were £92,049. '
