RAILWAYMEN’S WAGES. INCREASE FOB LOCO. MEN. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 1. The House of Representatives . met at 2.30 p.m. to-day. Notice of intention to introduce the Meat Export Control Amendment Bill and the Dairy Produce Export Control Amendment Bill* was given by the Hon. W. Nosworthy. Replying to a question by Mr L. Mellvride (Napier) concerning reports that the pay of locomotive men in the railway service had been increased by Is per day, the Minister for Railways said the statement was incorrect. The position was that wages had been increased from £3 19s lOd for a 44-h6ur week to £4 6s lid for 48 hours; That was to say, for the extra four hours 7s Id more would be paid. Wages had not been decreased; all that had happened was that. certain allowances had been stooped. JAPAN’S INTEREST IN CATTLE Mr P. A. de la Perrelle (Awarua) asked if the Japanese commissioners visiting the Dominion to investigate cattle and sheep would be given every assistance, as the visit might mean the opening up of profitable. business in the supply of stock and wool from New Zealand to Japan. The Minister for Agriculture replied that the visit was very brief, but the department was doing' all possible to assist the commissioners in making their enquiries. The following returns were ordered to be. prepared for presentation to the House: The amounts invested on the totalisator for each of the last four racing years, the return to show; the amount, of increase or decrease each year and the percentage of increase or decrease (Mi* K. The number of convictions under the Licensing Act for the period April 1, 1919, to March 31, 1924, in the King country proclaimed area, and the amount of fines paid during the same period (Mr C. J. The number of charges and convictions for offences for drunkenness and the number of. persons so convicted under 21 years of age; also the nuniber between 21 and 25 and the number above 25 years of age, in each nolicense district from January 1 to December 31, 1923, and the quantity and kind of liquor sent into each nolicense district from January 1 to December 31, 1923 (Mr L. M. Isitt). ACCIDENTS ON RAILWAYS. Detailed particulars of accidents to employees of the New Zealand railway service fox* each of the years ended March . 31, 1921, 1922, 1923 and 1924, the return to show separately (1) the number of accidents, (2) whether (a) fatal, (b) serious or'(c) minor (Mr S. G. Smith). The total amount of hospital fees in each hospital district remaining unpaid for the years 1911 to 1923, inclusive (Mr R. Masters). The number of warders who have left the service of their own will since 1912, the number dismissed since 1912, and the number of prison officers who have left and joined the nolice force since 1912 (Mr J. Atmore). The amount of interest paid up to March 31, 1924, on the war debt and the total amount of interest that the State will have to pay up to. the time of the repayment of the said debt (Hon. J. A. Hanan). Ihe amendments made by the Legislative Council in the Copyright Act Amendment Bill, extending the provisions to British protectorates and mandated territories, were agreed to.
