SYDNEY TRAM SMASH.
CONDUCTOR’S BRAVERY. BY CABLE—PEESB ASSOc.fa-I'tom— rnpvßT«tpr SYDNEY, Oct. 1. At the inquest on the two victims of the tram smash at MacMahon’s Point on August 21 the evidence was similar to the details already cabled. The departmental evidence showed that the cars were inspected before starting the journey and were, in good condition. The brakes were acting, but the controller was jammed owing to the holding screws being loose, while the wheels skidded on the greasy rails going down the steep hiil. Those in charge did all possible to avert a disaster after the tram got out of control. A verdict of accidental death was returned. The coroner complimented, in the name of the public, Conductor Cowan for sticking to his post to the very end in face of what appeared certain death. Cowan after the accident completely lest his memory, and it is only partially regained so far.
