PRICE-FIXING IN FRANCE.
GOVERNMENT CRITICISED. LONDON, Sept. 14. of criticism are falling on measures the French Government K.a taken to deal with the high cost Wf living, which please neither its friends nor its opponents. The Paris correspondent of The. Times says that the main charge against M. Herriot, the Prime Minister, is that in office he merely continues the policy which he so bitterly denounced when in Opposition. “If the Government l-eally wishes to reduce the cost of living it‘will pursue a course diametrically opposed to that which it is taking,” says Le Temps. This is also the opinion of the Journal des Dehats, which says that instead of threatening the ' commercial community with legal action and State competition the Government should concentrate in restoring the value of the franfe, otherwise all its efforts to fight against the high cost of livingwill he unavailing. The French Cabinet recentlv fixed the price of cereals, and debated the question of importing frozen meat.
